Hannah Burman (1859 – 1934)
Hannah Burman was born 29 March 1859 in Great Yarmouth to William Mackerell Burman and Hannah Waller1. She was baptized at the same time as her older brother William in 1874 in the parish of Great Yarmouth in the Church of England2.
At the age of two her family was living at Isabella Square in Great Yarmouth3. By the time she 12, the family had moved to the Rows4. At the age of 22, Hannah was living as a lodger in the rows and was working as a Weaver5. She continued to work as a silk weaver until her marriage to Arthur Algar in 18919.
Prior to her marriage to Arthur, Hannah had two children Frederick and Elanor, both born in the workhouse in Great Yarmouth6. Arthur and Hannah had another 4 children Beatrice, Arthur, Ernest and Gladys7. Her four eldest children were baptized together on 28 March 189512.
According to family information, Hannah was an upholsteress by trade and fitted out boats for the firm of Palmer Brothers. The Palmers Department Store in Great Yarmouth started out as a drapery shop in 1837 and continues today.
It is said that Hannah always wore dresses, never skirts, that were dark patterned material and a modesty vest. She wore aprons with pockets and made Simnel cake at Easter13.
At some point after her husband’s death in 1917, she moved to East Ham where she used to catch the tram to the Bowline Pub13. At the time of her death from a cerebral hemorrhage on 13 October 1934, she was living at Chesley Gardens in East Ham with her daughter Elanor10. When she died her estate was worth £316 14s 2d. She left £20 to each of her married children with the remained to be divided equally among the unmarried children, and left all her furniture, jewellery, china and linen to her two daughters Beatie and Gladys11.
