Johanna Albertina Johannesdotter was born 10 December 1876 to Johannes Samuelson and Brita Lena Henriksdotter1,2. She joined her half-sister Hilda Josephina (from her mother’s first marriage) and an older brother Johan Edvard. When she was born, her parents lived at Stråvalla 6 and Sefvedsgården, Stråvalla, Halland. Her father is listed as partial owner of the land, so likely a lessee farmer/worker of the land (I will further into this when I research him)3.
In 1880, the family increased with a sister named Augusta Sophia. In 1883, when Johanna was 7 and her older brother 9, he died. When her mother had a son in December of that year, they again used the name Johan Edvard, so now she had a younger brother of that name. Her youngest brother, Oscar Herder, was born in 18883,4.
On May 24, 1895, when she was 18 years old, she married Johan Anton Andersson. He was living in Hulegården, Stråvalla, working for his father on the farm. She moved to the farm with their family5,6.
Their first son Einar Joël Agnelius was born one week after they married on 31 May 1895. They continued to live on the family farm and increased their family quickly having five daughters: Anni Berhardina, Judit Signhild, Gerda Linnea, Alice Dorotea Ingeborg and Augusta Wilhelmina (who lived only three months); and another son Johan Albert7,8.
When Johan’s father died in 1911, and while their youngest child was still a baby, Johan and Johanna left the farm and moved with their four youngest children to Rya 4, Frillesås7,8. At that point, with no land of his own, or his family, to work, Johan was listed as a labourer. Their oldest son Einar stayed in Hulegården for a year and then moved to Canada7.
The family continued to live in Frillesås for the next several years. Three of her daughters moved away, likely to find work. Göteborg was a large city at that point. Gerda moved to Göteborg (Landa parish) in 1915 at the age of just 15. She moved back to Rya again in 1922 before going back to Landa 1928. Judit joined her in Landa parish in 1918 at the age of 19. Anni moved to Göteborg (Fässberg parish) in 1920 at the age of 23, though she moved back for a short time in 1921. Johan and Johanna sent their youngest son to another farm in the parish to be fostered and work when he was 10 in 1920. One wonders if all this moving back and forth was perhaps because Johanna was ill8,9.
Johanna died 03 March 1924 of a bladder infection10,11. Her estate inventory was filed in October of 1924 and completed in 1925. Her assets were only those expected of a poor housewife – clothing, furniture and bed linens. The total assets amounted to $125 SEK (equivalent buying power of about $525 Canadian today) and a single debt that amounted to $175 SEK; her estate was netted out to zero12.
On a side note, Alice’s daughter Ingrid Viola was born out of wedlock in 1922. Alice eventually married in June of 1924, shortly after her mother passed away and left the parish in 1925 on her own with her daughter (definitely a story for another day).
