Liv Olsdatter Hagna was born on 01 October 18231 at the Vegem (or Wejum) farm in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway.1 Her parents were Ole Olsen Hagna and Ingeborg Jonsdatter Voldtved (or Woldtved). She was baptized on 05 October 1823.1 Her sponsors were Aaste Tollefsdatter Wejum, Anne Olsdatter Woldtved, Fjorn Johnsen Wejum, Peder Jonsen Woldtved and Hans Olsen Wejum.
Liv was the second child and second daughter of Ole Olsen Hagna and Ingeborg Johnsdatter Voldtved. Liv was named after her maternal grandmother Liv Torsteinsdatter Voldtved.
Her older sister Aaste was born three years before Liv in 1820 (and was named for her paternal grandmother. Liv also had a younger sister Gunnil born in 1830.
As well as her sisters, Liv’s parents had a number of sons who did not live long. They were born in 1826, 1829, 1832, 1824, and 1836. They were all named Ole.
When she was 22, Liv married Rollef Thorstensen Holte on 24 September 18464 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway4.
Rollef Thorstensen Holte and Liv Olsdatter Hagna had the following children:
1. Torsten Rollefsen Holte (known as TR) was born on 27 Aug 18468 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway8. He died on 11 Jul 1929 in Lac qui Parle, Minnesota, USA. He married Anne Hansdatter “Anne Torgersen” Haugen about 1880 in Lac qui Parle, Minnesota, USA.
2. Ole Rollefsen “Big Ole” Holte was born on 04 Aug 18499 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway9. He probably died in 1908 in Beltrami.
3. Ingeborg Rollefsdatter Holte was born on 20 Dec 185110 in Telemark, Norway10 (Sauherad10). She died on 08 May 194211,12 in Clearwater, Minnesota, USA11,12 (Pine Lake; chronic myocardia with auricular fibrillation11,12). She married John Hansen Torgersen on 13 Jun 187813,14 in Lac qui Parle, Minnesota, USA13,14 (lic #A7807613,14).
4. Rollef Rollefsen Holte was born on 27 Feb 185415 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway15. He died on 01 May 1930 in Pine Lake, Clearwater, Minnesota, USA.
5. Kari Rollefsdatter Holte was born on 16 Jul 185616 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway16 (Holte16). She died on 14 Jan 1949 in Yellow Medicine, Minnesota, USA. She married Halvor Aslaksen Trovatten about 1880.
6. John Rollefsen “Jon” Holte was born on 23 Aug 185817 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway17 (Holte17). He died on 31 Mar 1947 in Clearwater, Minnesota, USA. He married Christine G Lucken in 1888.
7. Jens Rollefsen “James Robert” Holte was born on 04 Feb 186118 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway18 (Holte18). He died on 01 Dec 1941 in Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada.
8. Tollef Rollefsen “Thomas” Holte was born on 18 Feb 186419 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway19 (Holte19). He died about 190020.
9. Ole Rollefsen “Little Ole” Holte was born on 26 May 186621 in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway21 (Holte21). He died on 06 Jan 1927 in Clearwater, Minnesota, USA.
It is possible that Liv and Rollef named two of their sons Ole in honour of her parents inability to have an Ole that survived.
The 1865 census indicates that Rollef and Liv lived in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway5 in 1865. At that time, they had Big Ole, Rollef, John, Jens, Tollef and Kari living with them. Rollef and Liv were well respected and admired in the community and prominent in the social and religious life of the community.22
In April 1875, the four oldest children, Tosten, Big Ole, Rollef and Ingeborg set off for America.23 At that time, Rollef and Liv, Jens, Tollef and little Ole were living on the Holte farm.6
Rollef and Liv decided to join their children and, together with John, Jens, Tollef, Little Ole and Kari, they emigrated from to America8 on 08 June 1880.7
Liv died on 11 April 18952,3 at the age of 71 and was buried on 19 May 18952,3 in Lac qui Parle, Minnesota, USA2,3.
