Solomon Angst was born in Wil, Zurich, Switzerland on 8 September 1842 to parent Ulrich Angst and Anna Siegrist1. He was the youngest of seven children and joined his older siblings Elizabeth (1832), Anna (1834), Judith (1835), Jakob (1837) and Ulrich (1839). There was a first Jakob who lived from 1831 – 1833.
When Solomon was eight years old his mother died. Five years after that, when Solomon was 12, the family moved to Canada2. In 1861, it was just Solomon and his father Ulrich living together in Howick, Ontario3.
It is possible that Solomon enlisted in the US army for a seventh month period between September 1866 and May 1867. A person with the same name, and the correct age is listed on the US enlistment records15.
However, he was definitely in Canada again and in Howick in 1868 when he married Ann Lee4. In doing so, he became a step-father to her daughter Eliza. Solomon and Ann gave Eliza four half-brothers and sisters: Mary Ann (1870), Levi (1872), George Henry (1873) and Sarah Ann (1876)5,6. In 1871 the family was still living in Howick in Huron county, but by 1881 they had moved to Elma in Perth county.
Sometime between 1881 and 1882 Ann died. Solomon fairly quickly married a 19-year old Laura Mitchell in December of 18827. At that time, Solomon was living in the village of Trowbridge, in Perth county and Laura had been living in the town of Grey in Huron county.
Solomon and Laura added to the family with twins Solomon and Laura in 1884 and Ethel in 18888.
In 1891, Solomon and Laura moved their young family to Washington state, settling in Newaukum in Lewis county. Whether they travelled across Canada and down or down to the US and then across is not known. In 1899, they added another child to the family. In the 1900 census he is listed as Albert E.8. However, in the 19109and 192010censuses, as well as his obituary16, he is listed as Ernest.
Solomon continued to live in Newaukum and is listed farmer until 19309-,11, although it is likely he retired from farming. Their son Ernest was living with them in 192010and their daughter Laura had moved back with them in 193011.
Solomon died at home on 20 July 1934 at the age of 9112,13,14.
