Joseph McKee (1867 – 1946)
Joseph McKee was born in Balyihoridan, Armagh, Ireland 24 May 1867 to Joseph McKee, a labourer and Margaret (nee Gorman)1.
He married his wife, Mary King, in Belfast on 25 April 1886 when he was just 19, still a minor under Ireland’s rules. At that time, he was working as a labourer. The fathers of Joseph and Mary served as witnesses5.
By 1891, Joseph, his wife Mary, his mother-in-law Ellen and their young son were living at 52 Main Street in Rutherglen where he was working as a labourer2. In 1901, Joseph and his expanded family, which now included William, Teresa, Ellen, Maggie and his mother Margaret had moved 61 King Street3, where he would live the remainder of his life. He was now working as a brusher in coal mining. Annie and Dennis increased the family size and Joseph continued to work as brusher in 19114. A brusher was the person who gets the mineral down by blasting in the working face after it has been holed (sounds like a dangerous job). By 1922 he had changed jobs and was working as a steel furnanceman8 and was listed as a steelworker on his death6.
Joseph died 1946 at the age of 78 from chronic bronchitis (likely caused by the years in the coal mine) and cardiac failure6. He is buried in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Dalbeth, Glasgow7.
