Ellen McCabe was most likely born sometime between 1827 and 1831. According to her death certificate attested to by her daughter1, she was born in 1830; however, her burial record2 indicates a year later, and the 1891 census3 indicates 1827.
According to information supplied by her daughter, her parents were Patrick McCabe, an agricultural labourer and Ellen Cassidy1. She was born in Ireland, most likely in Northern Ireland as that is where her daughter was married in 1886. However, as both Cassidy and McCabe are common names in Ireland, and there was more mobility after the famine in the latter half of the 1840’s, she could have been from other parts of Ireland.
She married John King, likely sometime in the late 1850s, early 1860s and they had one daughter Mary (approximately 1862). It is not known if they had other children. Searches on the various databases available online have not been able to locate Mary’s baptism record, nor any siblings.
Her husband John died in 1886.

In 1889, she still lived in Belfast, as her grandson John Patrick was born there4 on Ardilea Street.
She was perhaps already living with her daughter and son-in-law at that time.
She moved to Scotland to live with her daughter and in 1891 she and was living with her daughter Mary and son-in-law Joseph at 52 Main Street in Rutherglen, Lanark, Scotland.
She died while living in Rutherglen on 5 May 1896 of Tuberculosis and a weak heart1 as certified by Hugh McKay.

She is buried in common ground and St. Peter’s Dalbeth in Glasgow2. Common ground burials were for those who could not afford to put their relatives in their own grave with a marker, so there is no marker of her grave.
