HIST | 20210820 Fold 3 • Checked records for William Young in the war of 1812, when it would be possible that he served. • Searched: “Young, William”, “War of 1812”, “United Kingdom” • None matched our William Young from Scotland. Not surprising as these all appear to be foot soldiers rather than navy. • Previous research for notes UK National Archives https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/trafalgarancestors/advanced_search.asp. Family story is he fought at Trafalgar and was on the Bellerphon (the Billy Ruffians) and was also an “actor in the american revolution”. • No record can be found of William Young at the battle of Trafalgar • He cannot be found on the HMCS Bellerphon list as one of the ones at Trafalgar. • As the american revolution was fought from 1763-1783, before WY was born, this is not likely • As given the information regarding his birthdate from his death, he would only have been 10 at the battle of trafalgar, this is not likely. • It is possible, however, that he served in the British Navy before he came to Canada in 1823/4 (per the 1842 census). All UK, Naval Officer and Rating Service Records, 1802-1919. • There are 3 William Youngs with approximately the correct BD in naval service. • However none served on the Bellerophon. • There are 3 William Youngs in this list, however the service dates extend beyond the time that our William Young moved to Canada, so it cannot be them. • Perhaps he was not naval but merchant vessel, which family history indicates he went to after service. National Archive of Canada: Canadian Immigrant Records Part I and II 1780-1906 and Canada Seafarers of the Atlantic Canada 1789-1935, Immigration and Settlement Correspondence 1817-1896 • Did a name search on Immigrants before 1865 National Archives, no luck St Lawrence Steamboat Company Passenger Lists 1819-1838. • There are a number of William Youngs on the However as they only show the name, it does not assist my search for further information. Scotlands People, general search • Only William Young born in Dunferline within the appropriate time frame is son of David Young and Margaret Drysdale. Family stories have his father as a lace manufacture, however David was a labourer. Don’t think this fits. No children named David, more likely that his father is named Andrew (oldest Son). • Found Andrew Young and Agnes Scot in Stirlingshire. Makes much more sense as these parishes were quite close together. However, not them as that William was still living there in 1841 with his mother Agnes. 20211128 Scotlands People general search. • Searched for birth records for Young with one parent named Wardrope (based on daughter Elizabeth’s middle name. • See pic below, have a John and Margaret as well as a Robert and Janet - don’t know if any are related, might be interesting to see next time in Scotland 20211128 Scotlands People Kirk Session books. St Ninians kirk session, Minutes (1795-1824), Ch2/337/10 and St Ninians kirk session, Minutes (1824-1838), CH2/337/11 • Scanned index for mention of William Young in session books, not found • There is a nice roll of heads of households in 1835 - doesn’t help me, but good to know. 20211201 Scotlands people • Searched for William Young in Dunfermline born around 1782 - two results, one James Young, one John Young. • This date is from the Young pedigree chart created by a member of the Manitoba Genealogy Society with assistance from a genie member of the british navy (retired) London • However May Nichols bd on this chart is incorrect, which brings into question other information. • Leaving for now until more information can be found. 20211201 Naval Officer and Rating Service Records, 1802-1919. Entry books of certificates, piece 004: Admiralty: botaswains, 1817-1839. https://www.ancestry.ca • Looked again for William Young that may have served in the Royal Navy in the years that would make sense for Wlm Young. • 21 found. Reviewed each for details of when served • One found who served from 1807 to 1819 as a boatswain. Unlikely an officer at 13 yrs old if bd is 1795, but might fit with a 1782 bd • Overlaps his marriage to May Nichol - would he have married while in the Navy? • Filed the record in the media file, but did not add the information to his details at this time. 20211229 UK Royall Naval Officers Service Records Index. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_col=200&_cr1=ADM+196&_hb=tna&_dt=RN&_fn=William&_ln=Young&_p=1800&_p=1700 • • Researching whether or not he might have been at the war of 1812 (rather than the American Revolution, which would have been too early). • • Searched for William Young 1700-1899 = 15 found • • None with appropriate birth dates UK, Chelsea Pensioner’s Service Records, 1760-1913 https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1952868 • • Searched for William Young = 356 found. Does not fit. This one is most likely,14 years would have started in 1805, he would have been somewhere between 10 and 13 which would be the right age to start as a “boy” in the UK Navy, which means he could also have then been at the Battle of Trafalgar and the Belleperon was at that battle. • • UK British Army Muster Books and Pay Lists, 1812-1817 https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/60546/ • • Searched William Young, 102 results. • • Ignored the 22nd light dragoons as they were in Inda until 1813 • • Ignored the foot regiments • * 3rd garrison appears to be Malta • • 2nd dragoons were home service • The National Archives, Trafalgar Ancestors • •Searched for Young, found one William 15 years old, however born in England, not Scotland. • •Searched on first name William born in Scotland and looked for born in Fifeshire • • No William Young • • One Wlm Richie - too old, • • Wlm Fotheringham, 22 possible? The National Archives, general information • • Searched records for Bellerphon in TNA 1700-1899 • • 188 available for download - all were wills, not helpful. • • • • Following might have info: • • ADM 101/90/1 Medical journals • ADM 53/191 Ships’ Logs • ADM 53/190 Ships’ Logs • ADM 53/192 Ships’ Logs • ADM 36/16498 Ships’ Musters • ADM 37/2916 Ships’ Musters • Etc. - Too many to order.
