One of the things I love about doing genealogy is when I find a branch of the family where they have very little of the information that I know and much new information for me. Late last year I was researching the children of Daniel DALE and Martha LOUGH.
Daniel DALE had eight children that I know about with Martha being the eldest born in 1811, and Rose Mary being the second youngest born in 1827.
I was excited when I came across information on Daniel’s daughter Martha and her husband Patrick Joseph McFAUL. What I stumbled onto; however, was a photograph mystery that I needed to solve. All based on this picture.
On Ancestry, several people who have my side of the family have posted this picture and attributed it to John YOUNG and Rose Mary DALE. I discovered descendants of Patrick McFAUL and Martha DALE have posted this picture and attributed it to them. This included an undated newspaper article titled “Buckingham’s first marriage is remembered” which identified the latter couple as the subjects in the picture.
The picture cannot be both couples. So, I needed to research and attempt to determine which couple was most likely in the picture.
I started by creating a timeline for the couples. Then I uploaded a copy of the photo to the MyHeritage photo dater. According to that program, the date of the photo is most likely 1889.
If the date is accurate, the picture must be John YOUNG and Rose Mary DALE. As Patrick McFaul had already passed away by the time the picture was taken. However, we can assume a 10 year error range and check the details.
If the picture is 10 years later, of course, it must still be John YOUNG and Rose Mary DALE.
If the picture is 10 years earlier, we can look at the reasonableness based on the ages of the couples. Patrick died in January of 1879, so we will assume the possibility of an 1878 photo. Patrick would have been 83 years old and Martha would have been 67. The ages do not rule out the couple in the photo. Though they may be a little young looking.
John would have been 52 and Rose Mary 51 at the earliest and 72 and 71 at the latest probable times of the photo, with the sweet spot accepting MyHeritage date being 62 and 61. Definitely still possible for that couple to be the people in the photograph.
We need to look at why the picture was taken. The picture is a posed picture and perhaps it was taken for a 50th anniversary of the wedding. That would put the photo in 1877 and the couple would be Patrick and Martha. However, in 1879 John and Rose Mary would have celebrated their 25th anniversary, so that would also result in a posed photo.
As none of the photos posted on Ancestry had information on the photographer, it was impossible to determine an approximate date of the photo based on that information.
The next step was to see if I could find any of the people in other photos. Without holding much hope I did some newspaper searching on the names using Newspapers.com and GoogleNews. I did not find anything.
I used Ancestry to search for any other images and found only the above photo on both couples.
I found a picture of the Young brothers contributed by Carol Jean Ireland Dockery on FamilySearch. From this picture it certainly appears that it could certain be John YOUNG as the gentleman in the photo/ The nose, eyes and style of beard match.
As I have not been able to find another picture of Patrick McFaul, I cannot rule him out as he too may have had similar features.
According to Tracing your ancestors through family photographs, the style of a round dark lace collar and a large pendant are most likely from the 1880s. I could not really place the gentleman’s clothing to an era. It does not appear there were any holders on the couple, which would lean toward an 1880s or later photograph. Three-quarter length subjects for studio portraits were popular in both the 1870s and 1880s. So overall, the composition does not appear to eliminate one couple or the other.
The cane is fairly unique as the crook is not pronounced at all, but I was unable to find out more about historical canes on the internet – I need a better search term.
Overall, I’m leaning toward the picture being of John Young and Rose Mary Dale, but I may be biased as they are my direct line.
I’m hoping someone in one of the families will have the original photograph with a photographer’s stamp as that will provide another clue. So, if you are a family member and you have a copy of the photo, take a picture of any of the markings and send them to me, I’ll do some more searching.
